Simon Carpenter is one of our 30×30 exhibition artists, and in this series of showcases we aim to show and tell you a little more about the artist, their work and why they chose the film they will be creating work for.

Raising Arizona (1987)

Film Synopsis

Recidivist hold-up man H.I. McDonnough and police woman Edwina marry, only to discover they are unable to conceive a child. Desperate for a baby, the pair decide to kidnap one of the quintuplets of furniture tycoon Nathan Arizona. The McDonnoughs try to keep their crime secret, while friends, co-workers and a feral bounty hunter look to use Nathan Jr. for their own purposes.

About the Artist

As a child of the 80s I’m so happy to be involved in this project. I am an illustrator from Torbay in the South West of the United Kingdom with a huge love for movies, comic books and video games. This passion has had quite the influence on the art that I create. Illustration has been my passion since I could first pick up a pencil and it remains so to this day.

Professionally, I have created illustrations for TV and film productions, BluRay steelbook covers/sleeves, record/album covers, book covers and various advertising projects. The bulk of my portfolio consists of a wide range of characters from popular culture including characters from film, TV, Video games and comic books in the form of poster designs.

Why did you choose that film?

When i was asked to be a part of this project, quite a few of the selected films had already been allocated to other artists but fortunately one of my favourites was still available. I’m a huge Coen Brothers fan and also, what’s not to love about the insanity that is Nicolas Cage. FUN FACT: Raising Arizona was the first DVD I ever purchased after upgrading from VHS and this is another reason that the film remains close to my heart.

I can’t wait to get started on the poster as the film has so much rich imagery that will hopefully result in a really cool design that reflects the fun nature of the film.

Any upcoming projects you want to tell us about?

Obviously I’m very excited to share process shots of my Raising Arizona poster as it progresses but I’ve also recently provided artwork for a limited edition BluRay for The Neon Demon and have another 3 titles coming out soon which i unfortunately can’t name at the moment. I love doing this kind of work so hopefully there will be more to come.

Be sure to check out all of Simon’s work, and we’ll be sure to share some teases of this Crime classic real soon.
